Smallmouth Bass
Micropterus dolomieui

General Information
Smallmout bass are a popular sports fish - hard fighting and a good table fish. With a good tolerance to various habitats and temperatures it has done well not only in North America but also in Europe, Guam, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Japan and Vietnam. It has had some negative impact upon native fish when introduced, being more robust and agressive.
Feeding Small smallmouth bass feed on insects and progress to other fish and crustaceans as they grow bigger. Crayfish is a sought after energy source for the smallmouth and you would do well to have a few crayfish flies with you when targeting this species.
Catching Like most other bass, the smallmouth will seek underwater structure from which they ambush prey. Look out for fallen trees, rocky outcrops, weed beds, anything that will give cover to these opportunistic feeders.
