FLY FISHING IN FRESHWATER NEAR SYDNEY (Australia)

By John Coles

Blue MountainsIf you are visiting Sydney and want to go fly fishing for trout or native species I have several options. Some of the near locations are only a two to three hour drive from Sydney. If you're short on time there's also the option of a one day helicopter trip including a site seeing trip over Sydney Harbour.  Most of the fishing lies west or south of Sydney.

Traveling west we pass through the magnificent Blue Mountains World Heritage area, I can show you some of the famous scenic views. You can fish some of the large impoundments, there are 6 major ones containing good stocks of rainbow and brown trout.  Fish average 1.5 kg and 2.5 kg + are not uncommon.  The whole area has many streams; these are small but contain reasonable rainbow and brown trout averaging about 1 kg with larger specimens often encountered. Many streams have the cover of willows for those hot sunny days while some run through tussock meadows.

John at the TumutI have access to private properties with their own stream and dam access.  I have one privately stocked dam that contains native species such as Cod, Yellow belly and Silver Perch.  If you have several days I can take you to a wonderful 18 acre lake stocked with native fish, this is a full days drive from Sydney. You really need a few days to enjoy this fly fishing paradise, set on the far north coast. I offer a range of accommodation, mostly on working cattle and sheep stations; this is a great way to experience a unique piece of Australian rural life. Some farmers offer farm-stay where you live with them.  I have a mixture of wonderful homesteads and cabins offering lodging, many are old historical homesteads, and some are unique building like shearers quarters.  I can arrange all food and I am a reasonable cook. If you need any equipment I can supply it and arrange the necessary fishing licenses. Let me collect you from Sydney Airport or your hotel in my comfortable 4WD.

lake lyellIf you have more than a couple of days we can head up to The New England area or south to Tumut and the Snowy Mountains. If you are just learning about fly fishing I can run special instructional trips and teach you to fly fish.  There are fly fishing options for trout all year round; some remote streams are open all year. I can take you for a day, several days, a week or longer.  Single anglers, couples and small groups can all be accommodated.

I am a member of the Professional Fishing Instructors & Guides Association. Check out my web site for more information or give me a call.
