Crustacean flies

Order: Crustacea

Freshwater crustaceans are an important food source for trout and other freshwater fish and are well represented by imitative flies.

Scuds (Orders: Amphipoda), or more correctly amphipods, are small primitive creatures that look rather like large fleas. They vary in size from 5 to 25 mm and are found in colours of light greens, greys, reds and blues. Scud populations are widely spread and some local knowledge is needed to correctly match size and colour with an imitation. The order Isopoda are Isopods that some call scuds but are distinctly different to amphipods. Isopods are larger and have a more elongated body and crawl rather than swim.
Shield Shrimps (Subclass: Branchiopoda; Order: Notostraca)these are prehistoric looking creatures with a shape rather like a horseshoe crab. These shrimps are usually brown and can reach body lengths up to 40mm. Temperate Australia has two species that are found in wetlands. The eggs are tolerant to drought conditions and adults will appear after extended dry periods.
Prawns (Order: Decapoda; Family: Palaemonidae) are scavengers that feed on decaying plant and animal material. Found in lowland rivers and ponds they will stay around the shelter of snags and vegetation having a translucent to opaque body with brown or blue markings.
Shrimps (Order: Decapoda; Family Atydae) are translucent, some with mottled blue, green, or darker markings and reach 20 - 40mm. They inhabit lowland rivers and ponds feeding on decaying vegetation, bacteria and algal particles.
Yabbies (Order: Decapoda; Family Parastacidae) and freshwater crayfish are large crustaceans that are widely dispersed and can survive drought and poor water conditions. Larger fish feed on yabbies and imitations are relatively large and fished to suggest a fleeing bait.
Crabs (Family Hymenosomatidae, Sundathelphusidae) of the hymenosomatidae family are known as freshwater spider crabs and have long legs and a circular body when seen from above. They reach about 20mm, are brown/grey. The Sundathelphusid crab looks more like a normal crab, are closely related to marine shore crabs and are found in tropical Australia.
