Dobson & Alder Flies
Order: Megaloptera
Dobsonfly (Family: Corydalidae) and Alderfly (Family: Sialidae)
are important trout food occurring in temperate regions. The larvae
are fierce looking predators growing to 20 - 30 mm long. Corydalidae
are also known as hellgrammites or toebiters and are found in
fast-flowing waters on stony riverbeds and look a little like
a centipede. The Sialidae dwell in slower waters and pools with
one species in Tasmania (Austrosialis ignicollis) and one in south-east
Australia (Stenosialis Australiensis). One of New Zealand's toebiters,
the Archichauliodes diversus leaves the water to moult. The adult
Dobson fly has a wingspan ranging from 35 - 100 mm, and Alderfies
with wingspans under 24 mm. Presenting a large Dobson fly imitation
on a warm humid afternoon may well entice larger fish eager for
such a main course.
