Dragonflies
Order: Odonata
Within the Order Odonata we have the best-known of all freshwater
invertebrates, the Epiproctophora (Dragonfly). Dragonfly larva
are fierce looking, short bodied, carnivorous hunters. Living
in weeds, rocky bottoms, snags, these predators rely on cover
and camouflage as they hide in wait for prey to swim or crawl
past. They have extendible mouth parts that shoot out and grasp
prey (the creators of the movie 'Alien' must have received some
inspiration from the Epiproctophora). The Adults are well known
for their beauty and amazing flying abilities. Larva are more
commonly used as imitations because they are more often eaten
by trout than the adults. Larva will migrate to the shore at night
to emerge as adults - this is a prime time to fish buoyant nymph
patterns as fish are on the lookout for such morsels. Adult imitations
are difficult to fish but for those looking for a challenge it's
worth trying as a dead drift dry fly - it will give the illusion
of a large and juicy feed caught in the water film.
