Freshwater Baitfish Flies
Most freshwater sports fish hunt small fish, and at times even
their own fry. Baitfish make up a very large and important food
source and consequently countless baitfish imitations have been
created to allure trout, bass, cod, and so on. Most baitfish imitations
for fly fishing don't look much like a fish when it's out of the
water. But when it's animated on the end of your tippet you can
achieve some very realistic results. Some important baitfish in
Australia are Whitebait (Aplochitonidae), Smelt (Retrophinnidae),
Galaxiids (Galaxiidae), and Gudgeons (Gobiidae). Do some research
and take note of the local baitfish in your area and match them
with streamers of similar colour and size. You may also like to
experiment with baitfish patterns that are nothing like the local
populations and see if they will elicit a strike. One of the paradoxes
of fly fishing is that for all the intense effort and detail we
put into 'matching the hatch' sometimes a change of fly to an
alien creation will evoke a strike when countless presentations
of a realistic local natural have produced nothing but frustration.
As part of our range of fly fishing flies we are committed to bring
