Hopper Flies

Order: Orthoptera

Grasshoppers and Crickets within this order represent a very large and widely distributed group of insects that have been an important part of fly fishing for Bass and Trout. The size and colour variations are enormous and the best choice of imitation can only come after consulting locals or personally observing the naturals in and around the water you are going to fish. Generally dry hopper patterns between size 6 and 12, with brown, green, tan, and black hues are handy to have on hand. Present the dry fly with a noisy landing to attract the attention of fish and dead drift with the odd twitch or try a twitchy retrieve to imitate the hopper trying to kick its way back to shore.

As part of our range of fly fishing flies we are committed to bring you a wide selection of hopper flies. Help us build our stock of hopper flies by requesting your favorite patterns.

Made To Order In the early 1950's Dave Whitlock started developing hopper patterns. Taking a Joe's Hopper and modifying it with a spun deerhair head he created what he called a Muddler Hopper. Through an evolutionary process we now have the now very popular 'Dave's Hopper' - tied all around the world and often in many subtle variations. This is a proven and realistic pattern wherever hoppers are found.

Made To Order It's summer, the sun is high, the water clear, and the smallmouth bass are as spooky as hell - enter the Letort Hopper! Casting against the long grass covered shore the Letort gently plops down - "presentation is everything" says the monologue in your mind....and the fly presents perfectly...and.. Explosion! Credit goes to Ed Shenk of Pennsylvania who designed the original Letort Hopper.

The fly remains a popular one in this area when Mormon Crickets are about. This is a large fly that could pass for any number of beetles, crickets, or other large insects.
