Lacewing Flies
Order: Neuroptera
Lacewings are broken into three families (Sisyridae, Osmylidae,
Neurorthidae). The sisyrid nymphs are small pale animals with
a body shape much like a fat maggot, the osmylids are larger (20mm)
slender dark predators, and the neurorthids are very long slender
and fast predators with a translucent/orange colour and a hard
head with large pincers. The adults are beautiful flying insects
with very large wings in comparison to their body. At times, often
at night, the adults will get caught in the water film and drown
- providing an easy meal for a surface feeding trout.
