Mosquito Flies
Order: Diptera
The Culicidae family are the notorious mosquitoes. The Larvae
(wriggler) and pupae (tumbler) are free swimming in still or very
slow moving water. They have to keep rising to the surface of
the water where their snorkel-like siphons pierce through the
water tension and provide them with oxygen. Larvae and pupae are
a good source of fish food and the adult on the surface of the
water or drowned in the surface film also entice rising trout.
