Water Mite Flies
Order: Arachnida
Water mites are small round aquatic spiders that are parasitic
in their youth and free living in adulthood. Most have a large
round abdomen and are in various shades of yellow, brown, red,
blue and green. The ones most often seen by the casual observer
are bright red and can grow to 5mm. Most propel themselves with
hair covered legs in what may appear an erratic manner. They inhabit
in all freshwater habitats and are more plentiful in slower waters.
